The condition, originality, rarity and historical significance of this Confederate Colt 1860 Army Fluted Cylinder cannot be overstated. Though interesting their meaning is lost to history. Included with this arm is the period Confederate "Slim Jim" holster that has been with this Colt for it's lifetime and the Colt Archive letter attesting to this revolver's authenticity. It is unknown how many of the 28 plated frame 1860 Armies remain but statistically it must be very few indeed. The ten notches on the left stock appear to be old and purposeful. Pate notes that this revolver, #1818, is one of the top five finest examples of this rare Colt that he is aware of. Pate, author of "The Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver", there are only 55 known examples remaining of these historic Confederate Colts. Sam Colt, rushing to complete this order, to Richmond Virginia, of 500 of his new revolver, shipped 28 "plated" guns and followed with 472 brass framed 1860 Armies with fluted cylinders. This Colt, s/n 1818, is one of those 28 plated guns. According to Colt archives only 28 of these 500 revolvers were shipped with a plated backstrap and trigger guard. It is believed that only 4,000 of this new Colt revolver were made with a fluted cylinder and 7-1/2" barrel. These 500 Colts, shipped to Williams, Peters and Company, were the last shipment, by Colt, to the South and the only arms that can be identified by serial number as being issued to the Confederacy. 1861, two days after the surrender of Fort Sumter. This early Colt 1860 Army, serial number 1818, is one of a famous order of 500 revolvers shipped to Richmond, Virginia on April 15th.
